Mr. Nobody- looking deeper.
Director Jaco Van Dormael used many different elements to depict the feeling of “Mr. Nobody”. In the beginning of his early childhood, Nemo Nobody’s life had all colors, especially the colors of yellow, red, and blue. When choices were made and his lives became more and more different, each of the lives lost more of their original colors. The life of Jeanne, was depicted with her yellow dress from the beginning, and was further shot in colors of yellow. The camera angles showing the shot with a blurriness where it should be focused shows how the main character, Nemo, looked at that life with not much concentration, as if he wasn’t ever completely there. The life with Anna is shown in colors of red, from the hues in her room to the red dress she wore as a girl. It also symbolizes the red of their passion and love for eachother. When they finally meet again, the same camera angles are used and molded together from when they were both teenagers, showing the continuation of their love story. And last but not least, Elise’s life was shown in shades of blue, because of her dress as a girl and her prolonged sadness about the love from a man she never received. The camera angles are shot with a space and distance being shown between them, showing the struggles they had. When Elise was dead in the other one of Nemo’s lives, the camera moved around mostly on it’s own, seperate from the movement of Nemo. This shows how his moves were different from everyone, dislocated and alone.
